The 12th Registrar’s Prize in Clinical Neuroscience was held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Ballsbridge, Dublin on October 2nd 2009. Registrars and Specialist Registrars from all areas of Clinical Neuroscience, who had carried out research during their training at an Irish Neuroscience Centre, were invited to submit abstracts for presentation in two separate categories:
I. Original Research
II. Interesting Case Reports.

A total of 10 original research studies and 13 case reports were presented and assessed by an independent panel of experienced Clinical Neuroscientists, and the keen audience participation added to the success of the event.

The meeting director, Dr. Dominick McCabe, Consultant Neurologist and Clinical Senior Lecturer at AMNCH and TCD, paid tribute to all of the presenters for their extremely confident, informative and stimulating presentations. The papers delivered at the meeting indicated the high quality of clinical and translational neuroscience research ongoing in Ireland, and also reflected the academic commitment of the senior clinical neuroscientists who supervised the research.

Dr. McCabe encouraged all presenters to aim to publish these interesting data in peer-reviewed journals to inform the medical and neuroscience community, and to enhance the clinical and academic profile of the presenters, hospitals and universities involved. The future of Irish clinical neuroscience looks very promising.
The prize for the best Original Research presentation was awarded to Dr. Aisling Carr, Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast for her paper entitled: ‘Classifying seronegative myasthenia gravis: a population based study’. Carr AS, Leite MI, Vincent A, Cardwell C, O’Reilly D, McConville J.
The prize for the best Case Report went to Dr. Orna O’Toole, Cork University Hospital, for her paper entitled: ‘The devil in disguise’. O’Toole O, Conlon P, Farrell M.

At the presentation of the Registrar's Prize in Clinical Neuroscience were Dr. Brian Sweeney, Dr. Dominick McCabe, Dr. Orna O'Toole, Dr. Seamus Kearney and Dr. Mike Alexander.
Dr. O'Toole was awarded the Registrar's Prize in the Case Report section and Dr. Kearney accepted the prize on behalf of Dr. Aisling Carr who won the prize in the Original Research section.
The meeting was sponsored by Janssen Cilag, and in view of the ongoing importance, success and popularity of the meeting, Janssen Cilag has kindly agreed to sponsor the event next year also. The date for next year’s meeting will be announced in early 2010.
